Step aside puppers! The cat kind are crawling their way to the top of pet celebrities in anime and we’ve got the list to prove it!

Even though a survey conducted in October 2020 shows that dogs were the most popular pet among Japanese people, cats are closing in on anime popularity in 2022. Why wouldn’t they be?

We have seen cats around Japan in every corner for centuries. And now we will take a peek at the world of (not just pet) cats in anime.

Miyazaki’s Cats, especially Jiji.

When talking about famous cats in anime, it is impossible not to mention the characters created by the famous director Hayao Miyazaki.

Of course there are way too many to mention, so we’re just going to say all Myazaki cats in general, but an an honorable mention goes to JIji. In Miyazaki’s Kiki’s Delivery Service anime, we meet Jiji, a helpful companion of Kiki who is training to be a witch.

Nekobasu

Nekobasu is a character from the movie My Neighbor Totoro, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. This cat, who has 12 legs and acts as a bus with a big smile on its face, is also featured in the 13-minute movie named Mei and Kittenbus. It is only shown at the Ghibli Museum.

Baron

The character of Baron (Baron Humbert von Gikkingen) in the movies Whisper of the Heart (1995) and Cat’s Return (2002) is also a character known by Miyazaki movie lovers.

Chi

Meowth

After seeing this post some of you may want to return to their childhood and rewatch Pokemon. I can’t blame you. After all this time, I noticed that he is a rare Pokemon with a speaking ability while his kind can’t speak. He imitates humans by walking on his two paws and learning to speak to communicate with humans. With this effort, he won a place on my list.

Doraemon is a robot cat who came from the future. I might not be wrong if I say one of the most loveable ones on my list. Sometimes I really need his pink door. How about you?

There are a lot of different kinds of cats in the anime, and these are not all of them, I know. I may even skip some creepy or scary cats, too. My list can even be called kawaii (meaning; cute in Japanese) cats of anime.
